"WASHINGTON — The United States and the European Union are nearing completion of an agreement allowing law enforcement and security agencies to obtain private information — like credit card transactions, travel histories and Internet browsing habits — about people on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean.

The potential agreement, as outlined in an internal report obtained by The New York Times, would represent a diplomatic breakthrough for American counterterrorism officials, who have clashed with the European Union over demands for personal data. Europe generally has more stringent laws restricting how governments and businesses can collect and transfer such information."

I don't want my personal data to be available to the US government! Especially given the fact that the US government doesn't want to give the same rights to EU citizens as Americans in regards to the data.

That is honestly disgusting. I know that there may be some people who are terrorists. But the potential of misuse is so much worse.

Have you ever read the book or seen the film '1984' by George Orwell Barracuda? I think you should.

I have. I wonder how long until Europe is no more and we have "The United Inter-Atlantic States" (or even "Ingsoc"...) or something - with pictures of the current president (or "Big Brother") everywhere... sconfused

And there was me thinking being in transit on USA soil was bad enough. I had to fill in a questionnaire card, and have my photo and fingerprints taken just for the privilege of waiting in a departure lounge while the plane refueled.

Yeah. Getting in is about the same amount of hassle, if not more. I had a friend who went a couple of years ago.
