Amber Alert
First off... I have absolutely no idea why, or how I am extremely scared of this sound.

Those of you who've heard the Amber Alert sound know what sound it is, and what I mean. It's not like it's a scary sound, really. A bit weird. But it's not supposed to be scary, because it is broadcasted onto completely public radio. I heard it for the first time during about... The summer between grade six and grade seven. I was in the car coming home from a late supper with some family. I was in the car with just my mum, and when I heard it, I completely freaked out. I know it was just a test, too! They said it was and everything. Once we got home I had to have my mother walk me inside, and she had to walk me next door to my grampy's to go sleep for the night. [We were just inside my cousin's house for a couple minutes.]

Anyway. That was about two years ago. Now I'm in grade nine and at High School. I'm still completely afraid of that sound; and it is most definitely a phobia of mine.

I also have an incredible fear [phobia] of mirrors in the dark. Like; in the bathroom at night or something? No. Not my cup of tea at all.

Has anyone else experienced the fear of the Amber Alert sound? My friend said it may have been a very frightening repressed memory of mine, and really? That wouldn't surprise me. I just hope that's not the case.

Yeah... It doesn't scare anyone else that I know. And I'm really wondering why the hell I'd be scared of simply a 'sound'.

Thunder gives me quite a shock, too, Sadly.

Yeah I fear thunder big time, maybe you're afraid of the Amber alert sound just because it's creepy..I get the chills when I hear it, but not really enough to be afraid of it.

Re: Amber Alert
Well, I suppose I have a fear of the amber alert sound. It's hard to explain though.
1) I dislike hearing it because I know what the sound means. A child has been reported missing and they presume that the child has been kidnapped. So, that's upsetting to hear. Plus, I had a pretty bad fear of being kidnapped about a year back. I've overcome the fear but part of me still cringes at the thought of a kidnapping.
2) I have a sensitivity to some sounds. Usualy loud, beeping, etc. So, the sound really gets to me because it's one of those sounds that bother me. It usualy gives me a headache. I guess I'm afraid for the sound to come on the tv or radio because I really dislike the sound.

I hope that made some sense.

Yeah, it made sense to me. Though noises don't bother me very much. My mum yells a lot, so I have a bit of a [complex] to loud noises [including thunder] , but either then that, I'm not too paranoid. I guess I have the weirdest fears.

I know very well what it means, which is a really freaky thing, too. Though I have a feeling my fear doesn't have anything to do with that.

When I hear it.. -- My friend played it, because I was talking about it. -- And when I heard it, I had my knees up by my chest; and I was plugging my ears with my face buried into my knees. A pretty extreme reaction, if you ask me. Then again, that's why I'm on this forum; [so I can understand why the hell I do that.]

My dad kinda has a disliking to the sign off tv noise, he had a dream as a kid that somebody was about to put a needle in his head, it was like slow motion so everytime he hears that he says "change that"..

This thread's starting to interest me now.

I'm from England, so I have no idea what an Amber Alert is.
Mind filling me in?

What is needed, rather than running away or controlling or suppressing or any other resistance, is understanding fear; that means, watch it, learn about it, come directly into contact with it. We are to learn about fear, not how to escape from it...

It might be something like that for me.. Though I have such a hard time remembering my childhood. 'Feels like there are gaps, y'know? Well. Maybe you don't.

I'd attempt to explain it but my explanaition would be to confusing.

An amber alert is an alarm that comes on the television or radio that signifies that a child has gone missing and was very likely kidnapped. Usually they'll list a few suspects or something. I've only heard it once on the radio and it scared the crap outta' me.

Search "Amber Alert Sound" On youtube.. It might be in french or something-- But no matter what language is; the sound is the same. It is terrifying to me. It sends chills up some people's spines; I'll warn you. But it's not bad to most people. I apologize if it creeps you out at all. v_v;

Re: Amber Alert
Just saw a video of it interrupting a tv show.

That low pitch ring. I can see why it scares you.
I think it's great that they can do that.
We don't anything like that here.
We just call the cops, if they've been missing for more than 24 hours, then they'll look!
Amber Alert seems to work too.

I've only had one sound do that to me.
Static on television.

I absolutely HATE the noise it makes. It makes me think something bad is going to happen.

My fiance and I were watching a dvd and it froze. So he turned the dvd player off. When he did the TV turned to a static channel. I just curled up and said "Please turn it off"
He didn't understand, so I repeated myself but with more urgency, "Please! Just change the channel!". Again he just looked at me to see why I was reacting that way. It was when I was almost crying that he changed it. And as you can imagine he was 'very' confused.

Odd no?

Wow I see what you mean...I had never heard of it before but just looked it up on youtube, and it gave me shivers down my spine. It sounded like something from a horror film...i wouldnt say I have a phobia of it though.
