Detective stories
Does anyone hate them as much as I do?

I wouldn't mind them so much, but the entire Swedish population don't seem to realise that there are other types of books out there. 3/4th of the shelves in the bookstores are filled with detective novels. It annoys me!
I've been trying to think of a famous modern Swedish author who doesn't write detective stories and I honestly can't think of a single one. It seems to be all they write.

Is people as crazy about this genre in other countries? I think England is supposed to be pretty detective-crazy too, but is it as bas as it is in Sweden? It's a disease over here!

I'm not dissing the genre by the way, it's not my cup of tea but if others like it that's good. The thing that annoys me is the fact that it's SO popular. I just don't understand it. sconfused

I'd be a dog, a monkey or a bear, or anything but that vain animal, who is so proud of being rational.

No, it's not like that in England, war novels are popular in England because of our war past, Harry Potter novels are too, & Twilight novels are popular maybe because Robert Pattinson is English.

Re: Detective stories
So it's not that bad there huh? Lucky you.

Harry Potter and Twilight are popular here too among the teens, but nowhere near as popular as the detective genre. I can't say that the war genre is too big here, not to my knowledge anyway. sconfused

Re: Detective stories
War genre is big in Britain, it's part of the Bristish pscyh, the British have been involved in warfare for centuries, & people like to read about it. Waterloo, World War 1 & 2, the D-Day landings, the Falkland Islands, I was bought up to learn about warfare. Older people when I was younger talked about World War II a lot. The Russians must still talk about it. God knows about the German psych (mindset) about World War II.

Needless to say, war in Afghanistan is taking up a lot of news, soldiers are getting killed, for some bizarre reason Britain is with U.S. in wars. U.S. went to war in Vietnam without the British, anyway maybe Britain should be a neutral country.

Re: Detective stories
I don't read a lot, at school I had to study about the Soviet Union so I'm interested. I'm interested in World War II, I've got a book called 'Berlin, the downfall 1945'.

You see, when I was a kid, I had toy soldiers, the British soldiers were green and the German soldiers were blue, & fortifications, & my brother & I & friends would re-inact battles.

When I was really young - like 8-years-old in 1982 - older people used to talk about the blitz a lot, and talked about the Germans badly because they said that alot of they're friends died. I remember seeing a German on T.V. & thinking 'What the hell? I thought Germans were hated.

Obviously, I learned that World War II was fought mainly between Germany & the Soviet Union at school, I'm still interested. So, I'll read the book, anyone my age or over, Germany still can be a nasty word, but must be more so in Russia, maybe the same as Japanese & Americans.

Yeah it makes sense that you'll find the topic of war interesting if you grew up hearing so much about it. Blob5
I can't say I'm too interested in wars myself, well I'm interested to a degree, but it's not something I would read much about.

...I grew up playing with monsters and watching horror movies, so I guess it makes sense that I'm a big fan of horror/science fiction books.

And yeah I've heard of Sherlock Holmes. I've never read the books myself but I know they're supposed to be good. Blob5
