Does anyone have a fear of Drowning?
My Father almost drown when he was about ten years old and now he wont go in the water unless it's really, really, REALLY hot out.
When I was younger he use to take me to the lake and he wouldn't come near the water. (Obviously he would come in the water though if I needed help). I understood that he wasn't crazy about the water but I was young and didn't completely understand his fear. I wish I could do something to help him but I don't know how. I just don't think it's fair that he still has this fear. The accident happend a long time ago. So, I just wanted to know if anyone has this phobia or knows someone who does? |

I am afraid of drowning, but its only if I accidently breathe in some water that triggers it, I panic like mad, and claw my way to the surface. Swimming is OK though, however I dislike looking down with goggles, feels like I am floating in the air very high up, and I don't like that.

I hate when I get water in my nose or mouth to, when swimming. It scares me because I you usualy choke and can't grasp your breath. I've never really been afarid of drowning unless I'm out really deep and there isn't anyone else around. That's very seldom though. |

I love swimming, but not to deep, because then I kind of panic and am afraid I might not be able to make it back to shore.

My mum is the same in the respect she can swim but she cant go out of her depth, she must always be able to touch the bottom else she starts to panic and cant breath. She also hates it when water is splashed in her face.

im scared of alot of swimming pools now. i do like going swimming on holiday, and at the beach and stuff, but when i was about 10/11, i went to this swimming pool that id never been to before with my friends. and they could all swim perfectly, and they jumped off a diving board into the pool, and i followed, not knowing that the bit that i was just about to dive into, was alot deeper than the whole length of me  i almost drowned..i was stuck under the water coz i couldnt swim to the top, and when i got to the top i couldnt swim to the sides, and the lifeguard only came over when i manged to somehow grab the side of the pool and save myself coz i was so scared i was gonna die :? since then im really cautious.

I learned that one of my friends is afraid of drowning, first hand actually. We were on a lake in a canoe when the canoe tipped. we both fell into 35 degree water and had to swin 50 feet back to shore (Our boat sank...) We did have life vests on. He panicked thinking his life jacket fell off and grabbed onto pulling me under the water several time. After he calmed down we started swimming back to shore.
Unfortunately as I said the water was 35 degrees (F) and about half way to shore, hypothermia began setting in. My body stiffened and I fear that I was going to drown. I froze in place and felt myself sinking. Thankfully though my friend came swan up next to me and scared me into my senses by surprising me. When we finally got back to shore I swore that I'd not go near water ever again. and it stayed like that for a few years until I went back to the same lake. It was a class trip to that lake. everyone else was having fun on the lake in canoes except me whom stayed on shore because of my fear. My friend was even out there having fun. He came up to me after getting off the lake and jokingly called me a wuss. At the time I was offended so I slapped him in the face and ran into the lake and swam across it to prove him wrong. without realizing it, I faced my fears. (the water was alot warmer this time). I didn't realize what happened until I got over to the otherside. I laughed at myself a few time then spent the rest of the day enjoying the water. Sometimes, a negative comment or action really helps a person do a positive thing to better themselves. |

That must of been a very frightening experience for you and thankully nobody was hurt. Its a very interesting story though with regards to how you managed to just get up and conquer your fear without really realising it. Since that day have you never worried about swimming? I must admit that negative comments from someone can really spur me on or motivate me to prove them wrong lol!!

well, there is always that little voice in my head that says "be carefull, the water is scary" but most of the time I still just go into the water and ignore the little voice. I'm also usually nervous when I first enter, like going on a roller coaster for the first time, but then i usually get used to it.

Well I personally think thats a good thing getting a sign to tell you "be careful" stops you being careless and doing something dangerous. You treat things with respect. Thats great you have overcome your fear though

I also hate bridges, but it's mostly because I'm afraid of heights! |
