Does even a picture of your phobia bother you?
For me even an image (and still knowing its just an image) of a spider gives me issues with anxiety. Just wondered if anyone else has the same issue, even though it seems ridiculous? Photographs are an issue however a simple black logo style outline image also sets me off somewhat. I guess its because it still looks like a spider. Anyone else?

I'm OK with pictures of spiders - it's just videos and real ones that set me off...

Re: Does even a picture of your phobia bother you?
I've felt sick seeing someone become injected in a photo or a video. It was a feeble effort to try and desensitise myself that failed miserably. For example, I've held a hypodermic syringe before but experienced no severe problems. But as soon as I see a needle or syringe enter someone's body then I don't like it any more, whether photo or in real life.

A webpage bothers me. It's some idea of a joke I think - but I don't like it. I don't like umbrellas, I have a phobia on them and if you go to http://www.umbrellaphobia.com/ all that is there is a graphic of a guy running away from an umbrella. I find it a cruel joke. :x

If I see it on tv...my biggest fear...I freak. Yet I watch the show House all the time and it triggers very bad memories.

Not really a picture, but if I see someone on TV do something that someone with social anxiety wouldn't like doing, I have to change the channel immediately . sconfused

Re: Does even a picture of your phobia bother you?
^Why is that though Joe? sconfused
I don't exactly get anxious when I watch people being social on TV and stuff, well I don't get anxious at all  However it can cause me to change the channel too as I end up feeling jealous and depressed because it reminds me of how much of a weirdo I am around people compared to others sconfused So in that way ut bothers me sconfused I'd be a dog, a monkey or a bear, or anything but that vain animal, who is so proud of being rational.

Re: Does even a picture of your phobia bother you?
I just don't like seeing it..it's really hard to explain
Like if it's people "acting" it doesn't bother me, only if it's real. sconfused and it's not specifically a person being social or whatever..it's more when a person gets laughed at, embarrass themselves or something.. sconfused Like I remember watching Conan this one time and the audience kept laughing at one of his guests..and the way they were laughing didn't seem too nice sconfused and I just couldn't watch it, I had to change it.. and I do get anxious, it's weird...Even though I'm not in that situation.. sconfused |

Harold-L Wrote:However it can cause me to change the channel too as I end up feeling jealous and depressed You and several other million sat in watching the same TV show. Interesting point about 'acting' tho. So much of social functioning is 'an act' or performance for the sake of it. Ya know - like how we be sensible when the police talk to us (and try to avoid looking guilty - for no reason at all - weird); or how we are polite with granny - in fact - when are we ourselves? |

Re: Does even a picture of your phobia bother you?
I don't think there's too many pictures of people throwing up, so I don't run into that very often, but when I was in 9th grade Nike ran an ad with a marathon runner getting sick when he finished the marathon...that magazine flew across the room pretty fast.

Re: Does even a picture of your phobia bother you?
Actually, the only exposure I've ever had to my phobia is in pictures or television. I have a phobia of sloths. I've never encountered one as they live in South America and I've never been there, and I've never seen one at a zoo. My friend gave me a National Geographic magazine that had an article that she thought I might like. She didn't know that I was afraid of sloths. I came across a picture of one, and quickly let out a little scream, tossed the magazine to my friend and asked her to remove the page that had the sloth in it and give the magazine back to me. Of course I then had to explain my phobia to her....which is always fun
