Emetephobia - Useful remedies
Useful Remedies
Although anti-emetics are the best thing you can use to reduce sickness and nausea, they are only available on prescription. We do not recommend that you use anti-emetics to help with this phobia, as you may become dependant upon them (not addicted to the drug just to the piece of mind that it gives you). You can use a variety of other methods to control your sickness and nausea, there are many different methods of doing this, from complementary therapy's to your diet. Some of best known ones and a few strange methods are listed below; Complementary Therapy's There a wide range therapy's that can be used to reduce the level of nausea most of these are complementary therapy's that can be use din conjunction with conventional medication. For example; aromatherapy, lavender& chamomile contain soothing properties that calm the user. There are also other therapies such as hypnotherapy and visualisation that can be used to reduce panic, anxiety and relieve symptoms of this phobia. Ginger/Peppermint Ginger is renowned for its stomach settling properties, ginger itself is native to India, China and Jamaica. As a spice it adds a hot and lemony flavor to foods and medically it plays an active role in herbal medicines. It is most commonly used as an travel sickness cure as it reduce nausea, it does this by producing gastric juices. Ginger can be taken in many forms from tea, capsules, pop, to sucking on crystalline ginger. Peppermint stimulates the production of gastric juices and also relaxes the digestive muscles and promotes the movements of food through your bowels, it has a powerful minty smell. Some Emetophobes carry a packet of mints around with them to help combat nausea when it occurs because of the minty taste and the effects that peppermint can have, they usually have same effect as peppermint oil but have a smaller scale. However, polo's for example can lead to indigestion if you eat to many, as they can cause excess gas to be produced. Your Diet Your diet is very important in the controlling the feeling of being sick, in fact you should never not eat because you feel sick this can lead to problems such as; lack of vitamins, nutrients and even a weakened immune system. The list below has some useful tips when you feel sick; Avoid fried, fatty or foods with strong smells when you feel sick Eat cold food if the smell of cooked food makes your nausea feel worse Eat several meals/snacks a day and ensure that you chew your food well Drinks lots of liquid, taking small sips Avoid getting tired Avoid filling your stomach with large amounts of liquid before eating a meal Eat a balance of the five main food groups and try to get your daily allowances of each type of food, this will keep you healthy These are only a few ideas that can be used if you feel sick, but remember to always eat something every day to keep your immune system operating at a high level. Sea-Band Acupressure is a safe and effective way to prevent and ease nausea associated with motion sickness. They work by targeting an acupressure point on your wrist, a sea-band is simply and band with a plastic stud that you place on the inside middle of your wrist. According to some Eastern cultures this point has a direct connection to the vomit centre in the brain and therefore, this band can reduce the feeling of nausea and sickness by placing pressure upon it. This method of treatment works well for travel sickness. Studies have proved that it is one of the best drug free treatments that is based upon acupressure (Acupuncture without the needles). The sea-band works by applying continuous pressure to the wrist using plastic studs. The sea band can be worn on each wrist whenever you feel nauseous and is discreet. |
