Emetophobia - What category
EMETOPHOBIA is defined as a fear of vomiting and people who suffer from it are known as emetophobes.
Emetophobes fall into two categories:- Those who primarily fear themselves vomiting and Those who primarily fear other people vomiting. Which category are you in? |

Re: Emetophobia - What category
I have a very bad fear of vomiting, myself.
I actually hold it in if I feel like I'm going to...And I have an E.D. and binge regularily, but can't purge because of my fear...I guess its for the best though. |

Re: Emetophobia - What category
This is a tough one for me because when I was pregnant I was afraid of throwing up in front of anyone so thats how I became agorophobic once again, but sometimes depending on who it is I can stand seeing the person throw up. An example of this is my sister when she was about 8 she kept screaming Im going to throw up and crying I told her to throw up it might make her feel better and she said she didn't want too. I kept rubbing and soothing her back and she actually did throw up in front of me and I had to clean it up which was not pleasant but because she is my baby sister and I'm her older sister I had to look out for her, and after all that she ended up feeling better. I can't stand it when my boyfriend throws up because it's not a little throw up it's actually buckets at a time which is disgusting and horrible and I don't know how he does it and those jackass guys make me feel sick to my stomach when I see them throw up because they are doing it for laughs, it's not fun to be sick. There are only another couple of people who I can handle being sick and one of them is my daughter because she is only 6 months old and has only just recently started eating what they term solid foods rice cereal and mashed banana, mashed pumpkin and also still drinking formula and thats what she throws up most of the time none of the solids so far thankfully.

Re: Emetophobia - What category
I guess I primarily have a fear of myself vomiting but because of this I have a fear of other people vomiting as well in case whatever caused them to vomit passes on to me.

Re: Emetophobia - What category
I haven't allowed myself to throw up since I was in the 5th grade. It didn't bother me before that. I mean it was no big deal before... but now I completely freak out, sometimes I even hyperventilate.
![]() When I feel sick, like I'm gonna throw up, I usually climb into bed and go to sleep; if I don't have that option I grab some food made from wheat and scarf.. that seems to help sometimes. I freak out even worse if someone else even says they're going to throw up, I've nearly jumped out of a vehicle doing 45 because a kid in the back said, "I feel sick." I've recently started hypnotherapy with my counselor, it has helped to some degree, but I'm still completely terrified of it. I think it's mostly the sound of it that scares me, I haven't ever been close enough to smell it, and the sight of it isn't that bad as long as I'm not staring at it like it's going to hurt me... So I don't really know what to do. ~HIS_FOREVER~ |

Re: Emetophobia - What category
I fear both, but it's complicated!
Although I fear myself vomiting much more, I only have panic attacks when someone else does it. The sweating, shaking, hyperventilating, etc. only happen when I'm in the same room as someone else vomiting (or hearing them do it, etc.) When I feel nauseous myself I just tense up all my muscles and concentrate on how badly I want to die... I will do anything to avoid contaminating myself with SVs or anything like that, but I know that when someone else throws up, at least I'll survive (well, they will, too, but you know what I mean. _cheesygrin:: ) By the way, I can handle watching it on TV or movies, even if it's quite graphic, but if it's too graphic, sometimes my heart rate shoots up! |

Re: Emetophobia - What category
Welcome MissJet! I am new as of today as well! I side with RubySoho in that I so envy you. I wish it didn't bother me to get nauseated and throw up like normal people! My family doesn't even know about it. No one knows my fear! Each and every day of my life! I too am not bothered by seeing it on TV or movies but if I see someone on the street throw up or make wretching sounds, my heart immediately races, I get dizzy and then I start obssessing to the point of making myself sick for no good reason. It is horrible.
The insane part of all this though, is that when I drink, I never get sick or get the nauseas when other people do. Consequently, I drink alot, at night which is when I always get the nausea and vomiting attacks. Never during the day. When it is daytime, I have no fear. Only as the night falls when the fear strikes me dead in my tracks. |

Re: Emetophobia - What category
I'll fess up, I'm also very jealous!
For me it's both, but in very specific ways. If another person says they feel sick, or were sick the night before, or something like that, I'm freaking out. The only way I calm down is if they say they ate something bad, or were drunk. Ashes, you mentioned people sick with hangovers, and I'm the same way. If I know it's nothing I can catch, then I've been right there with the cold washcloth on their forehead. If there's a chance that it's anything contagious, though, I'm as far away as I can get, crying and shaking. So pretty much my fear of other people getting sick all comes back to me. Selfish as hell, I guess. |
