fear of meat on the bone
has anyone else heard of or has a fear of meat on the bone?
i did all sorts of internet searches to find out the proper name of it but had no luck. my phobia only started when i was 13, up till then i could quite happily eat a chicken drumstick but then my mum cooked a casserole with chicken thighs one day and i burst into tears. ever since then whenever i see meat on the bone i cry, hyperventilate and one one occassion i fainted! i find it really embarrassing and other people think im crazy, would be nice to know im not the only one wo has this fear sophie x |

Re: fear of meat on the bone
Welcome to Ofear Sophie! shappy
I can't say I've heard of this particular fear, people can develop phobias to pretty much anything though, and you're not the only one with an "odd fear". I'm sure most of us on the forum can relate in one way or another. How extensive is your fear? I mean, do you get anxious only if you know that you have to eat the meat or would you get anxious even if you just saw a drumstick on TV? If you search through the forum a bit you might find some tips that can help you. Reading through our treatment section: http://www.ofear.com/phobialist/Treatment.html might help you get a few ideas of how to overcome your fear too. I wish I could give you any actual advice but I'm not all that good at it stongue If I was you, I would look into exposure therapy. From what I've read, for many phobias that's one of the most effective ways to overcome them. I'd be a dog, a monkey or a bear, or anything but that vain animal, who is so proud of being rational.

Re: fear of meat on the bone
Welcome to the forum Sophie.
I can't say I've heard of anyone with a phobia of meat on the bone, but I'm willing to bet you're not the only person. Phobias aren't always talked about openly, so some people tend to shy away from expressing that they do have a phobia. As for you saying that people figure you're crazy, I suppose that's why we all try to shy away from talking about these things much. You're not crazy though. Irrational fears and phobias aren't uncommon and have nothing to do with being crazy or not. As Harold suggested, read through the treatment section. Maybe you'll come across something that you figure might help you and you might be willing to try. Welcome to the forum again. I hope you find some helpful information, etc here.

Re: fear of meat on the bone
Hiya Sophie and a very warm welcome to Ofear
There is nothing strange about your fear as I myself know many people, myself included, that can't stand meat on the bone. I'm not sure how it developed for me but since a kid I've not been able to eat meat on the bone. Although I wouldn't call it a phobia because it doesn't really have any effect on my day to day life and I can actually watch other people eat it but of course would rather not so it's probably quite mild in comparison to yourself. I also have a problem handling raw meat and always have to get my fiancee to cut up meat for me if I'm cooking. I belive I'm getting better over time from being faced with so many people that do eat meat on the bone and I have been known on occasion to have the odd chicken wing but it has to be cooked really well. I hope the site helps you. John |

Hi shappy
I'm glad that I'm here. I learned from you guys. "The only thing we have to fear is fear it'self - nameless, unreasoning, unjustified, terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance." Nancy. New Jersey |

hello sophie , you have a very rare phobia. there are many ways you can possibly overcome this phobia, if you are motivated. the first thing you can do is confront the situation , make yourself realize how tasty the meat would be. see a psychologist and help you get to the reason you fear meat on the bone. draw pictures and or read books about meat on a bone , i.e chicken "drumsticks" , and ribs. |

RE: fear of meat on the bone
Yes I guess that I have that. I found out this year (I'm 14) when I was up north. My uncle was leaving and they had some chicken with the bone. My mom heated it up and I never had a food with a bone. So I took a bit and I just could not eat it. I couldn't really touch the bone eathier. But I have 2 dogs and when we would get the bones for them I have no problem with it I can touch it and not be creeped out about it. So I guess that I'm not alone.

RE: fear of meat on the bone
You most certainly arent alone and the phobia can arise in many ways.
Does it happen with all types of meat?
