Has anyone tried hypnotherapy?
There is a woman about 10 miles from me doing hypnotherapy and stuff. She covers all sorts of anxieties as well as smoking and weightloss etc. Has anyone ever tried hypnotherapy before? I am a little unsure what to expect as it all seems a bit far fetched to me.

I have emailed her and I am expecting her to be arranging me a free consultation! ...OoOoh, im all nervous

What are your goals? Why does it seemed far fetched?

Everyone uses hypnosis everyday!!!

My goals are to over-come social anxiety and shyness/blushing

It seems far fetched because I picture hypnotherapy as some therapist trying to put me to sleep with a swinging pendulum. I cant see how that stuff works in the way of altering ones mind.

How do we use it every day?

Social Disease,

Check out the Hypnotherapy thread below this one. There is a few basic keys about hypnotherapy in there.

I don't know of a single hypnotherapist using a pocket watch!!!

Hypnosis is a tool to access the very suggestable subconscious mind. It works very well to make changes in your life or body - as long as these changes are what you really want.

Hypnotherapy was really relaxing for me and I'm glad I did it, but it didn't reduce my panic attacks. Everyone is different and I think it is good to try different things especially non prescription med types of things, so I say go for it.

Re: Has anyone tried hypnotherapy?
The one thing that bothers most people is the fact that they are at the will of the hypnotherapist rather than having self choice and control, part of overcoming phobia is loosing control, if you don't want to loose some of that control, the one part of control that is unhealthy for your life, then your controlling yourself to stay the way you are, without change there can be no improvement.
The people that perform hypnotherapy are highly skilled and in no way want to make you feel uncomfortable, they just want to help you achieve your dreams.

Stu,

It's very important to remember that the person in hypnosis is 100% in control all of the time. My job is only to guide - it's up to them to follow....

I understand your explanation Rick, I'm seeing it more from the person with the phobias point of view, in a way as much as they are in control they still feel there not, I've explained to my girlfriend about hypnotherapy, but control is a BIG issue for her and she perceives that control is not hers it has to be given in order for them to regain control.

I did because I was scared of going to the dentist. I had 1 or 2 sessions and it didn't work. She said as soon as she would start with that procedure I would be right up!
I ended up getting some drugs to calm me down. My dentist is very nice and always told me wha she was doing so I always know what was going on. After the first shot my gum was numb and I was totally relaxed.

Hypnotherapy doesn't work for anyone, give it a try and see you're the right kind of person for that. 8)

Good point Stu. This is why I think CBT and the TEA form exercise in particular can be so empowering for people with anxiety and phobias as it builds their confidence and forces them to live in the present and get out of their head.
