Has anyone tried hypnotherapy? What were your experiences with it?

Re: Hypnotherapy - Who has tried it?
I have I have I have - too

Liked it so much i bought the company...well ok, that bit isn't true. But it did start my interest in hypnotherapy and then naturally led to NLP.

I've used 'hypnosis' with friends (don't do entertainment as i feel that has detracted greatly from the mass opinion of what 'hypnosis is'), they chose to stop smoking afterwards. While others have felt just more relaxed.

I use principles of NLP and hypnotic language in my work and in my personal life ;] tehee...only joking! angel11

Stage hypnosis is a spoilt child of hypnotherapy. There are many theories about stage hypnosis, but it's cheap entertainment for those who want to be entertained cheaply! While other people (Franz Anton Mesmer etc) have made a mockery of being 'mesmerised' and have therefore damaged hypnosis forever.

Did it work for me? No. Did it allow me to view the world differently? it most cirtainly did. So, did it really work? Yes.

Re: Hypnotherapy - Who has tried it?
I tried it as well but got no results as I said maybe my expectations of it were too high and I just kinda wanted a miracle cure which certainly didn't happen (I guess I will keep dreaming). It's so hard to actually find a good hypnotherapist. How can you actually tell if they are good or not ? I've just gone by websites and not recommendations because no-one I know has actually even tried hypnotherapy and all the websites say the same thing can cure phobias but none of them state how many people they have actually cured. I actually like street hypnosis like Peter Powers I find him really entertaining yes he does cruel things to people but hey if he could cure my fears and phobias I wouldn't care if I was jumping up and down like an idiot in my underwear. Apparently he left a man in a hypnotic state and he was chasing cars around here in Sydney Australia is that even possible ? It was in the local paper here a few months ago. Oh well I will keep looking for a good hypnotherapist. Rick I did try that number unfortunately for me they are all the way over the otherside of Sydney and I can't leave me house at the moment.

Thanks,
Destiny.

Hi Destiny,

It could be you're expecting too much from hypnotherapy initially. A good hypnotherapist will take a very detailed history, could take 40/50 mins just to identify a problem to work with. First sessions of hypnosis could look at your background and factors from your past that could be influencing how you feel now. Addressing them, in their historical context (regression being a tool of hypnosis) and then learning from those to allow you to progress to where you are now. Using an adapted behaviour pattern from history to now form new thoughts about how you feel and how you interpret the world. In doing so, it would help you address your current problems and form new thoughts and beliefs.

I shouldn't be an over night thing, it's something to allow your mind to come to terms with new behaviors and thoughts and adapt to the present. I would suggest, and I dont know if a professional hynotherapist would agree, anyone who says they can 'cure' a long term problem in one go, is perhaps not a good person to see. Your mind needs respect, from you and from any potential therapist, anyone who wants to rush these things isn't someone i'd want to see.

As for the guy chasing cars, people do only what they want to while 'hypnotised' and wont do anything to harm themself. As for entertainment hypnosis in general - don't believe all that you see.

Hope that's helped?

Re: Hypnotherapy - Who has tried it?
Thanks Super Ted I actually e-mailed Peter Powers and he has recommended me to someone here in Sydney who is a clinical hypnotherapist and a GP as well and seems to be highly recommended so I will ring him and see what happens. I was just wondering about the street hypnotism because in all the papers I read it said he was left hypnotized which I thought was impossible guess the news was really slow that week as well. I'm willing to try it the hypnotherapy again and see what happens this time around. The person that I did see took all my history into account as well as my immediate familys history into account. Really didn't touch on my phobia though, I guess the person was trying to introduce me into the world of hypnosis.

aldb85,

What makes you think you were not hypnotized?

It's unfortunate your hypnotherapist did such a poor pre-talk.

Most clients will remember every second of their hypnosis session. The truth of the matter is that hypnosis "Feels Like" you sitting there in the chair with your eye's closed. That's it..... Some clients might feel more, but not all. Alot just feel relaxed sitting in the chair with their eye's open. And that is perfectly fine. That is still hypnosis.

In the light stages of hypnosis the client can't usually tell they are hypnotized. Unless the Hypnotherapist uses manual depth testing or technology (like I do).

The chances are you were hypnotized. But the hypnotherapist you were working with did not go thru the proper procedures to verify it for both of you. And that is very unfortunate.

I would suggest finding a Hypnotherapist with more training and more experiance. Then you can have him deal with all of your fear issues with confidence.
