I Could Cry
Hi all,
I've been browsing this forum and have just signed up. I'm a 34yr old male who is petrified of the dentist, my teeth really need fixing with braces, the last time i went to the dentist was when i was 21 and i had no problem then, but now just the thought makes me nervous, i cant really handle pain that well, but everyday my teeth get me down as they are all crooked and stained :| I'm thinking about phoning some dentists just to have my teeth whitened as i know that i wont need any needle's for this, would you say this was a good idea? Thanks |

Re: I Could Cry
hey there welcome to the forums
![]() I have the same problem, im 16 and my teeth are crooked..i need braces too and im really not looking forward to getting them. im not too scared of the dentist but im dreading having the braces done even though i have too. If your teeth are stained i would say get your teeth whitened first and then see how you feel about the look of your teeth then...and if you think you still need a brace. You can get teeth whitening kits from any pharmasits(sp?)/drugstores aswel so you can whiten your teeth yourself. I would still go for the brace... you can actualy get invisible/clear braces now which look really nice as you can hardly see them. good luck |

Hi Ade
![]() Ade Wrote:I'm thinking about phoning some dentists just to have my teeth whitened as i know that i wont need any needle's for this, would you say this was a good idea? I suggest you look for a dentist who has experience of dealing with people with dental phobias. Some offer hypnotherapy and,or a large dose of diazepam to calm your nerves and all or sympathetic to you needs. As for the pain, If you explain you have a low pain threshhold you can ask for a higher dose of novocaine, but they might cost extra and you will still feel the pain afterward. Can you take NAIDS such as asprin? If so a combination of asprin and ibuprofen is relatively cheap and will help numb the pain. Hope this helps. ssmile Why do dogs bark? They are not barking, they are talking in dog. Obviously you don't understand the language. |

Hi Ade and welcome to Ofear
![]() I got nothing. Pain scares me too! Any pain. But I don't consider an aversion to pain to be an irrational fear... it makes perfect sense to me! My only advice: Get as much info about any procedures as you can - balance the pros and cons and make your choice. |

Re: I Could Cry
Hiya Ade and a very warm welcome to Ofear
![]() I can understand completely how you feel because I have been in your situation. I wanted to get my teeth whitened for my wedding but I hadnt been for 20 years as I was so scared of dentists but because it meant so much to me at the time I went through with it and I must say I was pleasantly surprised how good the treatment was. I explained beforehand how nervous I was and how low my pain threshold is and they took it all into consideration so I would do some research into what dentists are experienced with dealing with patients like yourself and give it a go. Re: I Could Cry
Thanks for the replies
I haven't looked into anything since i posted this topic, i'd like to tell the dentist of my fear but there's always a fit dental nurse so that just makes it embarrassing ![]() I'd like to take some form of pain killer before i go but as i'm the only one in my household that drives i cant be too sedated as i need to get to the dentist & back. Thanks again for the advice, i will definantly update to the route i take. Ade |
