My fear of flying
Hello, forum. I have a fear of planes and flying. I feel that something bad Will happen every time I go on a flight. This is strange, as this phobia I have had come fairly recently and I flew a lot when I was younger. Anyways, my mother is flying to California, then Saudi Arabia, via saudi airlines, and I am literally freaking out about plane crashes and bombs and hijacking and such. Yesterday, I spent hours on the web reading up on plane crashes and such and I found out that the airline she will fly on has a spotty record. I nearly had a panic attack. While at a scout camp, I completely broke down and cried so much that adult leaders called my parents. Can somebody Give me facts and knowledge and/or a solution so that I can stop freaking out about the possibility of her dying? Thanks. Btw AnXfOf means anxiety and fear of flying.

Hi AnXfof,

Im afraid i cant come up with stats and proof that flying isnt dangerous. It is however way less dangerous than driving in the common car and the odds of being killed in a plane smash are very small.

I cant offer any concrete help, other than to say that we do understand how you feel and perhaps you need to look at getting some professional help and counselling, because being so upset certainly cant helpSad

Thanks, it is good knowing that there are others who suffer from stuff like this too. I am starting to think I am going to Need therapy or medication, because I am worrying too much. I am also really superstitious, and I think I see signs predicting that the plane would crash, but nothing happens. D: I am starting to think that I suffer more than just a phobia of planes.

I can't offer much help, but I can tell you that I suffer from a fear of flying too. So you are definitely not alone.Blob5
I can also say that googling for statistics is probably the worst thing you can do. Rational arguments won't do much against irrational fears. Numbers telling you how unlikely a crash is usually don't do anything to combat the fear. But while googling for those numbers, you're likely to stumble upon a page or two that will make you feel even more anxious. At least that's the case for me. So it might be a good idea to try and avoid looking up too much information online.
Oh and I can relate with what you said about being superstitious. It was worse when I was younger, but I still have it whenever I have to travel by plane. The weeks leading up to the trip I get reaaally superstitious. About really stupid things. "if this or that doesn't happen, the plane will crash". I know it's completely irrational, but I still end up thinking that way. 005_sconfused

I'd be a dog, a monkey or a bear, or anything but that vain animal, who is so proud of being rational.

RE: My fear of flying
I literally go insane over the web searching various airlines and their flight safety records! When I read that this airline that somebody I knew well would be flying on, (Saudi Arabian Airlines) was involved in 2 of the top ten deadliest plane crashes, I freaked out and had a panic attack! When I am scared, anxious, or depressed, I am super irrational. My paranoia steps up a notch, and I become reaally superstitious ( and stupid) e.g. My friend Who happens to be middle eastern plays call of duty, (A violent first person shooter) and got 9 kills and 11 deaths, on a map taking place in an airport. :l for days, had a fear meant that her a. Plane would get hijacked or b. airport massacre. irrational, stupid, and... Borderline racist. Maybe because it's puberty that causes these things, as I am a teen, and the loss of a parent in such an early stage in life is devastating. I try to not think about what would happen if something was to go wrong. I now find myself with multiple fears, including plane crashes, plane hijackings or bombings, kidnappings, or a medical emergency with nobody to help.
