Needle phobia-scared of blood test
I'm new here
HelloSo I'm 16, and today I had to go for a blood test, and I managed to get there and get in the room and sit on the chair, but then when they swabbed my arm with the stuff I started having a panic attack, and seriously didn't want them to do it. Now I have to go back later when I have my boyfriend with me, because he will force me to have the blood test (like he did when I had to have an abscess drained). Weird thing is, once the needle is actually in me, I don't mind that much, and even usually watch whatever it is they're doing (again, like when they drained my abscess) I just can't stand the thought of them actually putting the needle in my skin... Can anyone help? |

Re: Needle phobia-scared of blood test
i don't think i can really help much, but my ex gf is exactly the same.. more of a fear of injections rather than the actual needle bit.. usually i tag along and try take her mind of it somehow, like start talking to her just before the injection so just as she realises what i'm doing.. the needle is already doing its work

Re: Needle phobia-scared of blood test
I understand what you mean. It's the waiting, up to the point of having the needle in your arm, that is worst. Then it's a bit better, easier when you can't do anything about it other than causing yourself a lot more pain by pulling the bloody thing out. So I do know the feeling. I can't watch what they're doing if it's involving the needle still being in my arm but I'm happy to sit through watching the procedure once the needle's gone. I'm still at the stage where I turn away when I'm forced to watch holby city (Only to understand what people are talking about and in order to understand various conversations.
) and they're jabbing needles in everywhere. But I still understand where you're coming from. Anyway. Loads of luck with the blood draw I hope it goes well and you're distracted enough. Try keeping your gaze away from whatever they are doing and make sure you're distracted by your boyfriend.

Re: Needle phobia-scared of blood test
Another trick I use is I usually hold something in my other hand , being it my keys or small object. Concentrating on that rather then the needle. I have a major fear of needles but I seen to use the mind over matter and it works most times. so your not alone.

Re: Needle phobia-scared of blood test
Welcome. I want to suggest what I had just suggested to another 16 year old on the forum. If your parents have medical care for your get psychological treatment while you are still covered and before your fears grow. Good luck!

Re: Needle phobia-scared of blood test
I cant even deal with needles when they are in me, i have a habit of feinting when they are within a foot of me and not recovering till after they are out. I know mine came from a bad experience, and if i can distract myself with music / reading etc then it helps, and i can just about handle it. unfortunatly they dont give you a chance to pick up such things when being rushed into hospital, but for planned blood tests it may help.
time for things to get sorted, may be if i do guys will stop finding me so repulsive |
