Re: Rant about - school and school work.
Stupid book. smad
It's so annoying when it says something in a school book that ...just isn't true, or that isn't the whole truth.
"The coordinating conjunctions are very few blahblahblah; the simple coordinators are AND, BUT and OR, and the complex ones are AS WELL AS, BOTH...AND, EITHER...OR and NEITHER...NOR."

So, from the sound of it, there exists no more coordinators.
Then I stumble upon a sentence in the book that isn't connected to that at all, but that got me confused: "The adverb THOUGH is mainly used in informal language, so it may be a good idea to avoid it in academic writing."

...the word so, it's not an adverb in this case, it's not a subordinator ...what is it? I google ...and it's a coordinator. The book failed to mention that there are like 5 or 6 more coordinators. ssleepy
Couldn't the author at least write "some of the most common coordinators are ..."? She's a liar! scry

I get complainy when I'm anxious about an exam. scool

I'd be a dog, a monkey or a bear, or anything but that vain animal, who is so proud of being rational.

Re: Rant about - school and school work.
Your last sentence contains a subordinator which introduces a finite dependent clause in the past perfective aspect. scool

...everything has a special name. sconfused

Random school related rant: British history is getting on my nerves. confused1

Re: Rant about - school and school work.
I hate this book!
I want it destroyed! Burnt and ruined! When I'm done with this book, people won't be able to recognize what it is at all. angry1

On another note ...I just realised that what I said before was incorrect. The dependent clause isn't in the perfect aspect; it's in the simple aspect, since "had" is the main verb and not an auxiliary verb. sconfused
Not that anyone cares, but I felt the need to make the correction. scool

Now, back to my school related rant; Why do all old kings need to have the same names? Henry I, II, III, IIII, IIIII .... William I, II, III ... Edward I, II , III .........
How do people not mix them up? I don't know which one did what!
And I'm embarrassed to say that I believed that King Arthur was an actual king. That shows how much I knew about British history when I started this course. scool

Complaining break over, back to work!

I'd be a dog, a monkey or a bear, or anything but that vain animal, who is so proud of being rational.

I believe kings were typically named after each other stongue

And Arthur may have been a real king. The historical evidence isn't conclusive (IIRC).

Yeah well ...they should have been more considerate when they named them. At least give each one a nickname. smad
I mean, I remember king "Rufus", and I know what he did. But I don't remember his real name.

As for Arthur, yeah I've read that the stories might be loosely based on truth; if he was real, he was probably a Celtic ruler. Blob5

God bless the rant room. Without it I would surely go mad. scool
Today's rant, this book is getting on my nerves! scry

It doesn't explain things, it just describes them really quickly and then jumps on to something new. Like the so called "gunpowder plot", it basically says that a group of Catholics tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament with King Charles inside. It goes on to describe that Guy Fawkes was caught in the cellar.
Well that's all fine ...but why did they try to blow up Parliament and the king? I mean, I can imagine a few reasons, but wouldn't it be a good idea to specify a bit of the background? What am I supposed to do with this information if they just give it to me like this?
If it was just this one thing, I wouldn't mind. But the author does it all the time, he says something that doesn't seem relevant to ...well anything, and then he jumps on to something new.

I'm so not doing well on this exam. confused1

^Thanks, now I actually remember the date. I was having trouble with that before.

Do you call it "Bonfire night" or "Guy Fawke's night"? Or both? I think I've heard both but I don't know which one is more common. sconfused

Stupid Sweden. ssleepy
I knew that they would make it more difficult for people to improve their grades after high school, but I didn't know that they would make it close to impossible. I have officially lost the little respect I had for this country.

As it is now, if you had trouble in high school - maybe you were bullied, you had social phobia, anything; you're doomed for life. They give no second chances, no matter what your reasons for "slacking" in high school were; you're stuck with the grades you got. I don't know how it is in other countries, but Sweden used to give second chances. For some reason, people seem to think that's a bad thing though. Lets vote for the party that screws the losers! If you slack in school you don't deserve to get a good life. If you were bullied, and your grades suffered for it, you deserve to get your entire life ruined. Hell yeah, that seems only fair. scool
Bleh I don't get anything, it just seems so unfair. ssleepy

Re: Rant about - school and school work.

The college admissions test that I need to take is 4 hours long. I can imagine it now. 4 hours in a room jam packed with people that make me nervous out of my mind, struggling to at least pass the test, while the only thing running through my mind will be "4 hours? But what if I have to pee?".

So, the question is, am I really ready for this? scool

Because they have very few spots left and I need to make a decision right about... well, now. sconfused Boo.

-Takes a leap of faith-

... Maybe.

-Thinks it over-

Boo.

I wouldn't worry about that Cowie. stongue
With basically all of the exams I've written at my university, it said that it would take 5 hours. You're done after 2 hours with most of them, one I actually finished in 45 minutes. So I doubt it'll actually you 4 hours to write it. sconfused

Can you leave the exam early if you finish? If so, that's not so bad.

Yeah, I doubt it'll take 4 hours to write the tests too. stongue But, there's 4 tests. So, something tells me they'll occupy the entire 4 hours, allowing a break between each test. Hopefully I won't be there for 4 hours though.

Barrucadu Wrote:Can you leave the exam early if you finish? If so, that's not so bad.

I haven't got a clue if I can leave early or not. stongue When I booked my seat, the only information I was given was what room my test would be in and the time it started/ended. And I think I'll run into issues if I can leave early anyways. The college isn't in my hometown. So, yeah. I'll have to wait around for someone to pick me up.

Basically, it's going to be a stressful day.
