'Rewinding' memory cures spider fear
'Rewinding' memory cures spider fear

A woman from Northamptonshire has had her lifelong fear of spiders cured with the help of a new US treatment.
Two weeks ago, Nicki Sail, from Kettering, could not even be in the same room as a house spider.

But after volunteering to test a new technique called neurolinguistic programming, she has been cured of her phobia.

She is now even able to handle larger spiders such as tarantulas.

'Bad memories'

Ms Sail recalls: "I could not sleep knowing there was a spider in the room.

"It would take me 20 minutes to catch one because I would not want to go near one."

But now she is happy to have a spider crawling over her fingers.

Andy Gibney, a neurolinguistic programmer who helped cure Ms Sail, said the method helps take away the bad memories that often cause a phobia.

"You reprogramme the way the brain sees a memory," he said.

"For example if you have a bad memory you see it over and over again, we go in with the use of music and rewind it."

Neurolinguistic programming has cured an actor who had a fear of singing and has even proved popular with local schools as a way of motivating both staff and pupils.

I have been trying to do this with my hypnotherapist, but it hasn't worked for me yet. I hope I can be a success story like the woman in this article some day.. Oops

The minimum amount of time I have managed to reprogram a phobia is about 2 minutes, the maximum so far was about 10 minutes and that was from a fear of spiders.

depending on the person it can take minutes and can usually be done even major phobias in under an hour with NLP.

the only reason it may take longer is if it isnt really a phobia you have. obviously a more deep rooted problem will take more time.

So if it doesn't work - it's not the NLP failed - it's the person's problems are too deep?

I love Derren Brown's work tho. Amazing skill.

or the practicioner isnt good enough.
sometimes thee are underlying causes. its not that nlp failed, its that that particular nlp technique failed, because it was the wrong diagnosis. that does not mean other techniques wont work, its simply about finding the root cuase and dealing with that.
basically, how you feel, in the long term, is a choice. nlp gives you the ability to make that choice where before you didnt know you had one.

Re: 'Rewinding' memory cures spider fear
All,

This is what is called the fast phobia model, it does work but like many NLP treatments it can be influenced when the client gets home by their environments or by their surroundings. I like my clients to do a task when I have cured their phobia's and I often go with them. Phobias can be quick or take up to 20 minutes half an hour to resolve, 2 minutes is very quick but it does depend on the client.

If the normal fast phobia model does not work, I use Time Line Therapy TM to do the fast phobia model on the timeline, for the deeper seated phobia's this works better and whilst slightly slower, it is very effective. Still, the way we work is we guarantee our work and whether it takes 10 minutes or 2 days, we get the job done.

It is a case of re-programming, and could be the technique being used, the experience of the practitioner, or the level of desire for the phobia to be gone. I would want my client to commit to doing something they would never have done with the phobia, in the case of spiders, I would want to take them into an insect house at the zoo. This re-enforces the work I have done, as the client will be fully associated with their previously fearful situation, and they will then know the phobia is gone.

This is highly effective, and works extremely well.

If you have any questions, I would be glad to answer them.

Regards

Chris

RE: 'Rewinding' memory cures spider fear
This sounds like something that would work for people who developed the fear mostly from a traumatic incident in their life. Might work a bit for my arachnophobia as I have had a few run-ins with spiders, but I think mostly my fear is purely in my genetics. I doubt NLP would have any effect at all on my trypophobia, for instance, simply because it developed in me naturally and is not based on any events or triggers in my life.
