What is it about flying...
What actually is it about flying you actually fear? What are you most scared of? Is it the landing/take-off, crashing in general or the cramped atmosphere, maybe a combination of them?
What is it for you? |

Re: What is it about flying...
Well I've just come back from New Zealand. The flight lasted 24 hours!
I would say it's definitely a combination of all those factors and more. Going there, my nerves weren't helped when before take off, the plane drew back into the gate as the captain casually announced that the plane was having technical problems! Returning home, I didn't like the turbulence mid-flight. It made for a very bumpy experience (and potentially a very hot one, as the cabin crew were starting to serve tea and coffee!). The last 20 minutes were the worst as we were caught in an air traffic jam and so had to keep circling. I hate it when planes have to turn- I'm convinced that there is a real chance that it might overturn and so end up upside down. However having said all that, overall I'm glad that I did it and I would readily do it all again. Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind. Dr Seuss Courage does not always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, 'I will try again tomorrow'. Mary Anne Radacher |

My fear of heights bothers me so much that I feel uneasy when I go over bridges. So, a planewould be a million time worse than a bridge! After all that, I do plan on flying one day. Hopefully. It's the only thought in my head during the whole flight. Worst during take off and landing tho. For some reason i've got it in my head that the plane is gonna break in the middle or that the wings are gonna break off  the claustrophobic atmosphere in the plane doesn't make things much better...i'm a tall guy so i have trouble with my leggs while sitting and it makes moving very difficult  I'd be a dog, a monkey or a bear, or anything but that vain animal, who is so proud of being rational.

Remember, the plane has to flex some, just like a tree. Pretend it's a boat.... enjoy the waves, and let it rock you to sleep. Check in earlier than advised. Or, if you can select your seat ahead of time online, do so. Find out what kind of aircraft you'll be flying in and get an aisle seat behind a bulkhead- they have slightly more leg room. Re: What is it about flying...
I don't mind the landing because I'm coming back down to blessed terra firma. I don't mind the turbulence because I know it has never brought a plane down and causes no structural damage to the craft.
It's the being trapped in a flying coffin 5 miles up going 600 miles an hour; that's what scares me. You have no control over what happens, I feel like I'm being entombed and I can't even look out of the window because knowing I'm that far off the ground petrifies me even more than being entombed in that tin-can-coffin! |
