Sad When other people don't understand.
No. It's not something I can just take a deep breath with and take the plunge. No, I can't just look away, I know where that damn needle is. No, medicine doesn't help, I've tried that little numbing patch and pills before.

Why can't people understand that when someone says the word "needle", I start breathing faster, my heart beats quicker, I feel a sudden urge to cover my shoulders, and tears well up in my eyes. Even now talking about it online, while wearing a long-sleeved shirt, I feel as though I should cover my shoulders with my hands.

It's not the pain of the needle, it's the invasiveness of it, there is something jabbing into my body, and it shouldn't be there. Get it out.

A nurse attempts to give me a needle, I cry, I scream, I lash out. For heavens sake, I'm 15. It's embarassing, and now our stupid governement has decided that I can't go to college or university unless I get the HPV vacine, Hep B, and Meningitis vaccines. They'll have to put me out for the needles. There's no other way.

RE: When other people don't understand.
Im always amazed and sometimes dissapointed how people try and play down the severity of the problem. Like you said, they tell you to just grin and bear or something else like that, they just dont realise how useless that advice is.

I have a grave fear of hieghts and people tell me not to look down.....Duh....like that helpsSad

There are ways around this, I am 40 and have not had a needle in me since I been about 17-18, even though many have tried. Well back to the vaccine, when I lived back in Hawaii I got a job as a bartender and the bar I worked at told me that I needed to get a TB test. Now there was no way that I was going to let any needle in me at the time so I told them it was against my religion. After I said that they had to find away around the TB and just gave me a chest x ray. Oddly enough I was the first person to their knowledge to say this. Turns out a few religions are opposed to certain medical procedures, Christian Scientist come to mind (which is the religion I used, personally I am an Atheist). If they require a blood sample I have used Hari Krishnas (who hold bodily fluid holy), and Johvas Witness, as my way out. Certain states (in the US) do have a conscientious objector for immunizations, Google that term and many pages will come up. You may have to check and look up what rules apply to the area you live in. Chiropractors are famous for their dislike of vaccines, you could check with one.
Lastly, while I have given you so advice over vaccine as a last resort, the best advice I can give you is to ask your parents to get you help with your fear. I am 40 years old and my body is falling apart I have lost a wife jobs and my health over this fear, and I on my 40th birthday I final began to take the steps in trying to over come this fear. Please don't be like me and please ask your parents to help with this fear. If they do not believe you then show them this web site and all the horror stories here, you are young enough to not have this fear run your life.
Henry
