Hi, I'm back. I haven't been back to the doctor (needle phobia), but had to go to the dentist today. I went online to find a new one and the ad. said they would give patient something for anxiety so that's why I went*. Yes, waiting was hard hearing the other patient and drills. Some people have said they don't like the dentist leaning in close. I can cope with that but have noticed when I'm in an enclosed exam room (four walls and no windows) it makes me more anxious.

While I waited I did my breathing exercises (from your gut three times or until you feel lightheaded) when I felt a panic attack coming on. The exam wasn't too bad and I was honest when something hurt. I'm not gonna lie, I was a nervous wreck before I left the house, but I wanted to handle this with some dignity. Anyway I'm getting a root canal next week and she might have to pull a wisdom tooth as well.

As we were talking later I reminded her that the ad. said she would help people who were anxious about seeing a dentist. I did tell her I'd had a bad experience years before and that I wasn't upset because of anything she and her staff had done. I respect that they have a job to do and I know I'm not a wus/crybaby/wienie (take your pick) in general. If there are practical ways to help reduce my anxiety there's no reason I shouldn't take advantage of it.

*So here's the good news: Once she saw I really was scared she agreed to write me a prescription right away. She was nice when I asked if nitrous oxide could be used if I took valuim beforehand. Knowing I can makes me feel better than wondering and fretting about it. Researching your options (that's how I knew to ask for a sedative before going back) and honestly communicating with your doc. to get them on your side makes a world of difference. I sympathize for anyone with similar problems and hope that has helped you in some way.

Hey Tek

Congrats on making some great moves towards over coming your phobias! I'm impressed with what you've done and think it will give inspiration to others to perhaps shop around and not be afraid to ask their dentist for a little help in dealing with things.

Well done you :D
